THE AWKWARD QUESTION

Over the years in ministry, probably the most awkward question I have asked individuals and groups has been, “What have you heard from God recently?” I say it is an awkward question because the majority of the time it receives an awkward response.

I don’t know if that comes from the notion that people who hear from God are a bit “strange” or what. I remember as a kid jokes about the guys in white coming to take you away if you said you heard God. And I remember the notion that people who said they heard from God were manipulative cult leaders. Frankly, I think it is just like the devil to muddy the waters, bring his masterful confusion, and put a shadow of doubt and fear over something that is a beautiful gift: An intimate walk with the Shepherd, hearing His gentle voice, lovingly leading you to the green pastures.

Years ago, I was struck by the record in Exodus 20 about hearing the voice of God. God wanted to speak to the chosen nation of Israel. Here is how they responded: “They said to Moses, ‘You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak to us lest we die.”  Exodus 20:19. They were afraid to hear the voice of God. You see, when you hear the voice of God, it is not as easy to dismiss His directives! If the pastor said it, I can choose to disobey without serious consequences. But if God said it, we are in a whole different realm regarding obedience.

One time, I had a woman come to me and said, “Pastor, will you ask God if I should marry Jason?” I immediately replied, “Why don’t you ask Him? Seems like you are the one who needs to hear the Father’s heart.” (We still want Moses to talk to God for us.)

This Sunday, the sermon is entitled, “Speak Lord, Your Servant is Listening.”

Question is: Are we? And are we in a place to obey when we hear? I hope to sweep away the mystery, fear, and doubt around hearing the voice of God, and remind us of the wonderful access we have to the Father through the Son. I promise you will be encouraged!

Come prepared to listen to HIM!

Following the Shepherd with You,

Pastor Daryl
